Sheffield Printmakers Spring Newsletter 2017

Shared Practice Group

We have had quite a few visits, demonstrations and discussions this year. Visits have included seeing the Gertrude Hermes exhibition at the Hepworth Gallery, the John Moores Painting Prize exhibition at the Walker Gallery, featuring one of our members, Mandy Payne, and the Picasso print exhibition and West Yorkshire Print Workshop exhibition in Barnsley. Demonstrations by group members included Jelliprinting at Angela’s house and Coco-cola lithography at Linda’s house and discussion about woodcuts and linocuts.

Art House Exhibition

This group exhibition was linked again to the ‘Off the Shelf’ festival, and was in a new venue at the Art House in central Sheffield in October last year. The exhibition was a great success, with a lively and well-attended opening night and sales in excess of £1564, together with some commissions afterwards. The Art House kindly extended the exhibition at no extra cost. We look forward to returning later this year for another group exhibition on 7-28th October.

Bakewell Town Hall

Some members of the group took part in a print fair in November, and Peter York ran a print workshop to tie in with this event. There is a rolling exhibition of members’ work in one of the downstairs rooms.

Ferens Open

Members Katherine Rhodes, Judith Webster and Ian Bishop had work exhibited in this exhibition in Hull between January and March.

HSBC print fair and Lady Manner’s School fair

Some members took part in these events before Christmas to sell work and publicise the group.

Lady Manner’s School Fair

Some members took part in this event at Bakewell.

Pop-up banners

Trevor Pollard kindly designed and organised the delivery of two new ‘pop-up’ banners advertising our group, for use at events.

Website

Rachel Collier-Wilson has kindly taken over the website for us, and is currently updating it.

Kafountine Project

There will be a final exhibition in Bristol this year by the printmakers from a small village in Senegal, which Trevor Pollard has been actively supporting. It will now be up to the Senegal printmakers to take the project forward into the future. Go to www.kafountinelinoprinting.com to see their website and prints.

Events to come this year…..

Many of the group are taking part in printmaking events this year.

These include an exhibition of members’ prints inspired by the heritage of St. Marie’s Cathedral (19th May-2nd June), with a printmaking demonstration by Peter York on the 24th May,  and several members taking part in the ‘Pop-Up’ shop in the Winter Gardens (2nd-14th May). Cath Dunn, Jan Slater, Suzi Thompson, Katherine Rhodes, Kay Aitch, Sarah Sharpe and Rosemary Watson are taking part in ‘Open Up’ Sheffield this year. Linda Green, Angela Harpham, Anthea Stephenson, Jo Pye and Judith Webster are taking part in the new ‘Freshly Pressed’ print fair at the Civic, Barnsley on the 15th July. Members Trudy Roe and Sarah Sharpe are taking part in the Derbyshire Open Arts festival from 27th May- 4th June. Some members are investigating the Wardsend Cemetery in Sheffield for printmaking inspiration for their 160th anniversary this year, with a view to exhibiting work.

Many members are aiming to submit work to the ‘Harley Open’ exhibition this year. We are hoping to repeat the success of 2015, when several members’ work was selected, two of which were also prize winners.
